Herbert Burke, 91, of Clarksville, IN died at his residence Tuesday, May 11, 2010. He was born on April 13, 1919, in Letcher County, KY, the son of the late G. W. and Maggie (Stewart) Burke. He was a member of First Southern Baptist Church in Clarksville. He was retired from Philip Morris, a World War II Army Veteran, and a 54 year member of American Legion Post 35.He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Maxine Shepard Burke; his sister, Florida Massey; his children, Dennis Burke (Mary) of Clarksville, IN and Janice Smith of Portsmouth, VA. Seven grandchildren called him Papaw; Erick Smith, Melissa Miller, Christopher Smith, Amy Fitzgerald, Amy Kellem, Rebecca Johnson, John Burke. Ten great-grandchildren also called him Papaw; Quinton and Lucas Miller, Bailey and Weston Kellem, Evan and Ryan Johnson, Gillian, Zoe, and Burke Fitzgerald, and Samantha Smith.A memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 18, at 11 A. M. at First Southern Baptist Church, 215 Ettels Lane, Clarksville, with visitation from 10:00 to 11:00 A. M. A private service will be held at the New Albany National Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Multiple Sclerosis Foundation or Hosparus-Hospice of Southern Indiana.
